Close your eyes. Imagine Sunshine sparkling on waves. Smell the lemon scented breezes. Taste the olive oil. The Mediterranean life is a sensory feast that we try to bring to our homes.
The Mediterranean house design is a blend between Spanish and Italian architecture. Popular architects in the 1920’s like Addison Mizner, Bertram Goodhue, Sumner Spaulding and Paul Williams have introduced this design to Florida and California who had Spanish influence and are known for their warm weather. Since then, the Mediterranean style took over the seaside resorts in the United States. Fortunately, you don’t have to live by the coastal line to bring this style to your home. In this post, you will find some background on the common characteristics and decorating tips to include in your home.
Main characteristics:
If you are someone who likes simple and elegant spaces, than the Mediterranean house is a dream for you. The Mediterranean style is timeless. It doesn’t require updating. It is characterized by really warm woods (wood tables), bright walls and indoor-outdoor living. This can never go out of style.
The outside of Mediterranean houses features a red tiled roof. You can also have bricks or stucco that is painted white. The doors are usually carved and there is a lot of metalwork especially on windows and balconies. The front doors are usually carved and the houses feature details in the stone.
You can find 3 types of Mediterranean house styles:
- Italian Renaissance: this style is marked by columns and rounded arches.
- Spanish Revival: This home usually boasts simple, clean lines and a low-pitch roof.
- Modern Mediterranean: The style has traditional characteristics of Mediterranean homes with a modern twist. A focus on indoor-outdoor living, spacious, open floor plans, along with Spanish and Italian influences, are evident.
2. Symmetry:
When decorating a Mediterranean style house, you must always think about symmetry as it is an understated look. Try to keep the décor really symmetrical. Do pairs of chairs, pairs of sofas and pair of sconces. This is especially seen in the Mediterranean Kitchen and bathroom.
3. Colors:
The trend is to opt for one color and adopt the same flooring type throughout the property. Reframing is also a trend.
The Mediterranean style comes usually with warm wood. This style of property goes with dark wood and walnut furniture, antiques or neutral and lightweight furniture. Linen takes a big role especially with a strategic pop of color.
Both paintings (wall painting design) and furniture are kept to a minimal. White paint usually brightens up the room when dark wood is used. A few colors pop in the room once we are done with the furniture.
4. Outdoors:
The outdoors reflects welcoming vibes. Intimate spaces are created in the garden. Use pergolas to make terraces and gardens more enjoyable eve during warm hours. Decorate them with growing plants which adds organic decoration.
PS: add some garden lights
5. The interiors:
The goal should be to aim for a welcoming vibe too. Create intimate spaces by building a fire pit to a dining area. Pay attention to the placement of your curtain designs
You can also bring your outdoor indoor. Add pieces of organic material like wood tables or sea-grass rugs into your décor. Bring plants inside. They can be in ceramic planter to incorporate a more Mediterranean vibe.
Work also on the olfactory senses. Use fragrances based on lavenders, citrus, basil or rosemary.
